Spencer Kiser

Hello there!

I’m a technology leader with over twenty years of experience helping cultural institutions transform their digital presence and organizational practices.

At The Metropolitan Museum of Art, I spun up the first native app team, helped define the museum’s Open Access initiative, and built the Museum’s public API. After recently wrapping up a major migration effort, the team is now building on top of a modern stack and architecture, using current engineering practices. Most recently, the team released semantic search for the collection.

Before joining the Met, I was a developer at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), where I was on the team that built moma.org and the native MoMA Audio+ app. My favorite part of the work was getting away from the screen and into the galleries: projects supporting exhibitions and education programs, accessible interfaces for in-gallery kiosks, and prototypes that test new ways to experience the museum.

Outside of coding, I have a background in sound design and field recording. I hold a master’s from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP), a technology school in Tisch that values human curiosity and collaboration over tech for tech’s sake.
